From TWH to Total Community Health: Exploring ideas to further improve worker health, safety, and well-being
Integration of injury and illness protection programs with programs designed to improve worker health and safety, along with recognition of factors that arise from outside the workplace, are not new ideas, having been suggested by the World Health Organization in the early 1980s. Perhaps the best-known approach to putting these concepts into practice is the US NIOSH Total Worker Health® approach, which is described as “policies, programs, and practices that integrate protection from work-related safety and health hazards with promotion of injury and illness prevention efforts to advance worker well-being “. This presentation will discuss the fundamental concepts of TWH, provide practical examples, and illustrate the importance of employee engagement. We will explore worker health, safety, and well-being within the context of Total Community Health, and briefly examine community strengthening practices which can improve community health and well-being, and potentially lead to improved worker health, safety, and well-being.
