Occupational Hygienist and Safety Specialist (PM 4)
Under the direction of the Manager, Occupational Hygiene and Safety the incumbent is responsible for developing occupational health and safety programs, investigating health and safety hazards, investigating accidents, preparing briefs and reports as required, assisting in the preparation of general safety policies and procedures and representing the Office at Ministry of Labour investigations and inspections. The incumbent responds to requests for workplace hazard evaluations, and prepares reports and recommendations using professional judgement. The incumbent also acts as a liaison and resource person for joint health and safety committees. Course development and instruction on health and safety issues to staff, faculty and students are an important component of the position and knowledge of and interpretation of health and safety legislation and guidelines.
The incumbent will have or be expected to obtain professional certification in one or more areas of occupational health and safety such as Occupational Hygiene, or general safety. In additional to general occupational hygiene and safety expertise the incumbent may be required to specialize in one or more areas such as chemical safety, laboratory safety, Designated Substances, asbestos, mold, respiratory protection, heat/cold stress, lockout, working at heights, confined space entry, ergonomics, or noise.
(Minimum):
A) Formal Education
Master's Degree in Occupational Hygiene or related discipline or Bachelor's Degree with an equivalent combination of practical experience. Must have obtained or have the qualifications to obtain and maintain professional certification in an occupational health and safety discipline such as occupational hygiene (ROH or CIH), or general safety (CRSP,CSP).
B) Experience
Experience required will vary depending on educational qualifications. Professional certification generally requires 5 year's working experience. Depending on educational qualifications some of this experience may be obtained on the job.
C) Manual Skills
Ability to use monitoring and sampling equipment and personal computer. Must possess valid driver's licence.
D) Other
Ability to communicate effectively both in oral and written English.
